Quickie Sunday Post

Since I've been away most of the weekend so far due to travelling for my work's Christmas/Dirty Santa Extravaganza, this is a quick post to recap the weekend's biggest stories.

-NCAA conference championship games. I will do a more comprehensive College Football post once the bowl games are announced, which will include choice rants, final regular season rankings and more.

I will say this: the two teams who are clearly playing better than everyone right now are Oklahoma and Florida. Against my better judgement, this may be the best match up for the BCS. Oklahoma and Texas is also a possibility.

Tragedy hit on Friday night as Ball State lost its bid for a perfect season, losing to Buffalo. RIP undefeated season.

-Very rarely do I mention boxing. But last night two things became clear: Oscar DeLa Hoya should quit. Now. And Manny Pacquiano could be the best fighter in the world. This guy essentially moved up two weights to fight the Golden Boy. And dominated him! Hard to believe Pacquiano started at 106 lbs!!
-One of my favorite baseball players and maybe this generation's best pitcher (Sorry Roger the Roid) Greg Maddux will announce his retirement. He might not have looked like much or even talked that much. But he was truly a complete pitcher. He didn't have to having a blazing fastball; he pitched smart. He also fielded his position like none other. His 355 wins should assure a first ballot election in the Hall Of Fame.

-NHL player Sean Avery was suspended for six games for making disparaging comments about ex girlfriends. I have seen lesser penalties for violent hits. Is the NHL right in this case?

-Scratch the Penn State men's basketball team from my radar of teams to watch. For now. After losing to Temple on Saturday, PSU lost a chance to pad up their potential NCAA tourney resume with a quality win. Now we must wait out to Big Ten season to see if they are tourney worthy.

And finally...the person who acts as the PSU Nittany Lion mascot was suspended for a violation of team policy. The student was apparently busted for DUI and will miss the Rose Bowl. I guess even mascots are not immune to off season issues

I will be back tonight for my final regular season college football review
